The below should go out to all PD installers.

The main update in this version is improvements to the built-in LPD service in PDAgent. Now the PDAgent can automatically convert all matched print queue ports to local LPR ports. This allows the PDAgent to receive print job data as if it was a printer itself. This has the following advantages:

  • Print queues are no longer paused.
  • Jobs disappear from queues immediately and won’t be visible by other users when they look at the shared print queue.
  • V4 / Class drivers are fully supported.
  • No workaround needed for XPS print path apps (e.g. Win 10 Edge and Photos).

The next version after this one will make auto-converting to local LPR port the default setting. The reason it is not default yet is because it is relatively new functionality and we want to gather more data as to how it performs in the field. We strongly urge technicians to enable it as it is far more reliable than the current default (no changes to the port and keeping jobs paused).

To enable it, there are two steps required.

  1. Once the installation is complete, enable the LPD service on the default PDAgent and the installed PDAgent. (Note: this will disable the Windows LPD service if it is running).
    1. Select all PDAgents, right click and choose Edit x PDAgents:

    1. Click the Print Services tab.
    2. Tick both the checkbox next to and the Enable LPD Service checkbox.

    1. Click OK.
  1. Now we need to change the setting on all Shared Devices that will cause all matched print queues to have their ports automatically changed to local LPR.
    1. Navigate to Device Management > Shared Devices
    2. Select all the Shared Devices including the <default shared device>. Right click and choose Edit

    1. Click the Function Settings tab and then the Advanced button in the Printer Function frame.

    1. Click the Queue Settings tab.
    2. In the Change the port for matched print queues frame, change the drop-down to Change to local LPR and click Close.

    1. Click OK + Refresh All.

Any existing queues that were matched to device will now have their ports changed to local LPR. If you create new queues, just use the Standard TCP/IP Port and enter the device’s IP address as normal. This way, the PDAgent will know to which device the queue must be matched. Once the PDAgent refreshes and sees the new queue, it will match it to a device and convert the port to local LPR. You can see the changes by checking the Print Properties > Ports or by looking in the Print Queues list in Resource Manager:

Note that the name of the port has the old IP address appended but the Address field is changed to 127.0.0.1.

It should also be noted that auto-configuration of the driver settings will be affected by this change. If you want to pull the device configuration by clicking Obtain Device Information on the Configure tab of the Printer Properties, you will need to change Destination Settings on the Obtain Settings form:

  1. Open the Printer Properties.
  2. Click the Configure tab.
  3. Click the Obtain Settings button.
  4. In the Destination Settings frame, select the option Specify IP Address or Printer Name.

  1. Enter the IP address for the device.
  2. Click OK and then Apply.
  3. Now you should be able to update the device configuration by clicking Obtain Device Information.
